Code reviews6 min read

In my last post, I talked about what code reviews are and how they benefit our development team.  What I did not mention was how this translates to benefits for our consumer. More stable, efficient code and faster turnaround times, resulting in lower prices.   Let’s explore how this makes for a better customer/user experience.

First, we demo the code to each other so we can see it working.  This means looking at it from the user side.  Sometimes, there are errors in code that aren’t noticed initially but become obvious on the user side of things.  At TMG, customers are able to test the software we are creating for them as it is created.  Demoing our code to each other helps us to catch errors in the user interface or functionality of the software before it is released. Demos are also a way to keep coders and designers in sync.

How does cleaner code benefit the user in the future?  If our code is written in a cleaner more uniform way, then it is easier to maintain in the future.  If a bug is found in the future or if a customer wants to add features, cleaner code makes it faster to both maintain the software and add features.  Code reviews help us make sure our code is clean and understood by the team.

Having the code reviewed by the team means we can’t just throw something ugly together that works “for now” for speed’s sake. We are kept honest by each other and are able to catch changes to make code more efficient and effective.  What this translates to for the customer is software that works faster and more productive, and that is great for everyone!.
